Why the loading unit is the point
That is the central idea. In an intermodal move, the container or trailer box transfers whole between train and truck. The merchandise is never touched, which removes time, handling cost and damage risk at every transfer.
When it fits
Rail has a better cost per ton-kilometer than trucking, but it only reaches where there is track. Intermodal solves that limitation: the train covers the long leg and the truck covers the first and last.
The equation tilts in favor when:
- The distance is long
- Volume is high and regular
- The freight is not same-day urgent
- Origin or destination sits near a terminal
The factor that decides in practice
Drayage — the distance between the intermodal terminal and the warehouse. Every kilometer of that leg is billed at truck rates and erodes the rail saving.
That is why a warehouse adjacent to an intermodal terminal holds a structural cost advantage over one forty minutes away, even at identical rent per square meter.
