Loading dock
The contact point between the building and the transport vehicle. Count, type and height determine how long each shipment takes and which vehicles you can receive.
The loading dock is the contact point between the building and the transport vehicle: where goods come in and go out.
The two types
- Elevated dock. The building floor sits at trailer-bed height, so the forklift drives straight into the vehicle. It is the standard for pallet operations at volume.
- Grade-level dock. The vehicle loads from ground level, with a ramp or manual handling. Slower, but necessary for vehicles that do not match standard bed height.
The three figures that decide whether they work
Count. The practical rule: count how many vehicles you expect to receive and dispatch in your peak hour, not your daily average. An insufficient dock turns every unload into a queue.
Height. It must match the vehicles you will actually receive. If your inbound arrives in vans and your outbound leaves in trailers, you need both types.
Maneuvering yard. The turning radius available in front of the dock. A short yard prevents certain trailers from accessing, no matter how well the dock itself is sized.
Why they matter so much in cross-docking
In a cross-docking operation the dock stops being an accessory and becomes the process itself: freight enters on one side, is sorted, and leaves on the other. The ratio between inbound and outbound docks directly defines the platform's capacity.
