Pallet position

A pallet position is the slot assigned to hold one pallet within a warehouse racking system, identified by its level and its location in the rack.

Why capacity is measured this way instead of in square meters

Because it describes actual storage capacity, not floor area. Two warehouses with identical square footage can differ completely in available positions depending on their clear height and racking configuration.

When you lease area you pay for the floor; what you use is the volume.

Where the term shows up

• As a billing unit. Under flexible rental, storage is invoiced per occupied position rather than per contracted area, which makes cost follow real occupancy.
• As a capacity unit. When sizing a warehouse, "12,000 positions" says more than "20,000 m²".
• As an address. In a WMS, every position carries a unique identifier that tells the operator exactly where to go.

How it is counted

The rough calculation starts from three figures: how many rack modules fit the layout, how many levels the clear height allows, and how many positions per module at each level. Change any of the three and capacity changes without moving a single wall.
