The distinction that matters
A WMS does not answer how much do I have — accounting inventory control does that. It answers where it is, in what condition, and what has been done to it.

They are not substitutes: they coexist. The ERP keeps the inventory's accounting; the WMS keeps its physical reality.
What a WMS does
Directs. It tells the operator which location to go to, what to take and in what order. It converts individual judgment into process.
Validates. Scanning at each step — receiving, put-away, picking, packing — catches the error while it costs seconds to fix.
Optimizes. It applies picking strategies so the operator walks less per unit prepared.
Leaves a trail. Every movement is tied to an operator, a time and a location.
The signs you need one
Physical counts never reconcile; the team loses time searching; shipping errors carry a recognizable cost; productivity per operator cannot be measured; lots or expiry dates are tracked with FEFO on a spreadsheet.
